News of the week – Back from Brutal Assault

My apologies for only posting this article now but the delay (pun not intended) was caused by my tiredness after coming back exhausted from the Brutal Assault festival in the Czech Republic. A full live report will come soon.

Serpentine Dominion is the long awaited side project featuring Adam Dutkiewicz of Killswitch Engage (and let’s not forget Aftershock), George « Corpsegrinder » Fisher (Cannibal Corpse, of course) and Shannon Lucas (The Black Dahlia Murder).

All path leads to nowhere but they also lead to the debut album of Columbian Necktie, a Los Angeles band somewhere between Black Sabbath and Ken Mode according to publicist Curran Reynolds. LA Weekly is streaming a song off their debut LP scheduled for 30th September via Black voodoo records.

Produced by Billy Anderson (Neurosis, Sleep) and mastered by Colin Marston (Krallice, Gorguts). Even with only these two names you know that Black Table is doing something right. Add to this a gorgeous cover by Eric Lacombe and you would be a fool to not give this a minute. Check it out via Metal Sucks under Curran Reynolds’ recommendation.

A song off Norma Jean‘s Polar similar is streaming and it contains a featuring from Sean Ingram, singer of Coalesce. The song is streaming via The PRP and the album will be released on 9th September via Solid State.

Lotus Thief is another project from members of post Black metal band Botanist and a song from album Grammarye is streaming via Invisible Oranges.

Expire will break up after touring in support of their last album, With regrets, scheduled for 23rd September via Bridge nine. A first song off it is streaming.

Expire will bring Knocked Loose on their forthcoming last European tour and if you want to mosh, this is for you. Laugh track will be released on 16th September.

Mare Cognitum is a name to remember for fans of progressive Black metal. The output of the solo project is being made available on tape by label Les Acteurs de l’Ombre and a song off new album Luminiferous Aether is streaming before the album’s release via I, Voidhanger on CD and Fallen Empire on vinyl via Invisible Oranges.

Another SubRosa song from We fought the battle of ages is streaming before the 26th August release date via Profound Lore.

Meek is Murder and I Am Become Death have both contributed to the upcoming tribute to Helmet which covers the album Meantime. Magnetic Eye Record will release it on 16th September.

Full release

Fear and fury is the name of a new EP by Pallbearer. The release will be out via Profound Lore on 21st October.

In other news

Tony Iommi is in remission of his cancer. Of course, it probably won’t affect the end of Black Sabbath but it’s great news for the man and his family.

Darkthrone will release a new album called Arctic thunder on 14th October via Peaceville Records.

Voivod and Entombed AD will share a split available on their forthcoming European tour together.

Freya, the side project of Earth Crisis‘ singer, will release a new album called Grim on Fast Break Records on 30th September. Dirk Verbeuren (ex. Soilwork, Megadeth) will play drums on the album.

Live shows

Emperor will play Anthems at the welkin at dusk at next year’s edition of the Brutal Assault festival in the Czech Republic. Ulcerate and Electric Wizard, who cancelled shortly before the festival and have already confirmed to be on for next year, will be on the bill too.

Vital Remains, Venom Inc and Mortuary Drape will tour Europe in October.

Cult Baltimore hardcore band Ruiner seem to have enjoyed reuniting to play This is hardcore and will play more shows but probably not around here yet.

Black Tusk, the bruising sludge unit who released an excellent album reviewed here, will tour Europe in October and November. The trio will notably headline the Boston Music Room with Hark (ex. Taint) in London on 3rd November.

Music video

Giraffe Tongue Orchestra (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Alice in Chains, Mastodon) have a music video.
